Afghan forces battle to push back Taliban in Helmand

And on Wednesday, the Taliban claimed to have captured the district of Gulistan in Farah, a remote western province, but governer Asif Nang said the claim was “baseless”.

However, General Abdul Wodud, a senior army commander, said a joint Afghan and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation operation backed by air support had driven the Taliban back from central areas, killing 60 Taliban fighters and wounding 40.

The war in Helmand, seen as the epicentre of the expanding insurgency, underscores worsening security in Afghanistan a year after North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally ended its combat operations.

The U.S. Department of Defense on Tuesday released the identities of the troops killed in the attack.

A security official in Islamabad told AFP Tuesday that Pakistan army chief Raheel Sharif would travel to Kabul in the coming days, in what appears to be a renewed push to jumpstart talks.

Attempts to airdrop food to the defenders were unsuccessful until an air strike, believed to been carried out by Afghan air forces, temporarily dislodged Taliban positions and allowed supplies to get through, according to officials.
