The attack came shortly after Israeli police officers arrested a Palestinian man in Jerusalem’s Old City in possession of a knife. Then he pulled out a knife and tried to stab one of them, officers opened fire and killed the assailant.

The policemen took a step back to avoid the attack while one of them fired at the assailant, killing him on the spot.
The Health Ministry said the latest incident brings the number of Palestinians, killed by Israeli fire since October 1, to 138, including 26 children and 7 women, and that the number of wounded Palestinians exceeded 15.000, including more than 4500 who were shot with live fire and rubber-coated steel bullets. The soldier, 21, was in moderate but stable condition with a stab wound to his upper body.
In the first incident, police “spotted a man who aroused their suspicions and approached him to check”, the spokeswoman said.
Nearly daily Palestinian stabbings, car-rammings and shooting attacks have killed 20 Israelis and a US citizen, raising fears of a wider escalation a decade after the last Palestinian uprising subsided. Hammad was shot and killed Friday when she sped toward Israeli forces, police spokeswoman said. Pedestrians stopped and helped the soldier stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived to give emergency treatment.
Palestinian sources named the driver as Maher al-Jabi, 56, who they said died of his wounds in a Nablus hospital. Israel has blamed Palestinians for the outbreak of violence.
Thousands of people gathered on Saturday for the funeral of a Palestinian woman shot dead by Israeli forces a day earlier.
Another soldier was injured by gunfire directed at the Palestinians.

Palestinians are seeking the recognition of their independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, an area partially, and many consider illegally, occupied by Israel.
