At least 11 die in Texas tornadoes

From tornadoes across the South and Texas, to flooding in the Midwest, to a blizzard watch as far west as New Mexico, severe weather contributed to a mounting death toll and continued to keep authorities on high alert throughout the Christmas weekend.

A tornado touched down about 6:45pm local time (11:45am AEDT) in Garland, Texas, city officials said in a statement.

The Texas fatalities came after 17 people were killed in storm-related incidents since Thursday in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas.

The National Weather Service in Dallas-Fort Worth determined Sunday that the destruction left behind in hard-hit Garland was the work of an EF-4 tornado.

“It was worse than I thought”, Guzman said, comparing the scene to the photos he had sent Saturday.

Tornadoes and severe storms across the Southeast late last week contributed to the deaths of at least 19 people, according to the AP. Scores of people were injured in the region, officials said.

Emergency crews and local residents are working amid intense rain to fix the damage from the tornadoes, but new tornado and flooding alerts are being issued and meteorologists are predicting heavy winds and a rain- and snowstorm for Sunday night.

Damage was limited after a tornado touched down around 5 p.m. CT Friday just 10 miles outside Birmingham, Ala., knocking down trees in a working-class neighborhood. The NWS says this is only the second tornado of that strength to strike Dallas County since 1950. “Please do not get out on the roads if you do not have to”.

Extremely warm temperatures and an unstable weather pattern brought Christmas Day tornadoes and flooding to Alabama, damaging homes and leaving hundreds without electricity.

“It’s going to be quite risky for anyone exposed to these elements”, he said said.

Six people died in flash floods on rural Missouri roads overnight, Pulaski County Sheriff Ron Long said Sunday, as a result of the same storm system that hit Texas.

Extensive damage has been reported to vehicles homes and apartments in the same area.

Heavy rains sweeping through the Dallas area and into parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas could bring heavy flooding in some areas for days, Wiley said.

Flood warnings and advisories also remained in effect in parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and other areas in the southeast.
