The last time ITV beat the BBC to the top spot on Christmas Day was in 2000, when Coronation Street was watched by an audience of 13.7 million.
However, we say the real victor of the day was Downton Abbey.
ITV will be hoping to bring in viewers with the last-ever episode of Downton, which is bowing out with a much-anticipated special episode at 8.45pm. The frequently unfortunate in love Lady Edith lastly got her completely satisfied ending, as she Wednesday Bertie Pelham, while servants Anna & Mr Bates welcomed their 1st child.
Downton Abbey won the battle of the Christmas Day ratings as 6.9 million tuned in to wish a fond farewell to the Crawleys on ITV and catch-up services.
In truth Maggie Smith’s Dowager Duchess of Grantham had delivered the best obituary earlier when she remarked: “With any luck they’ll be happy enough, which is the English version of a happy ending”. “The camera is just going to move away and unbenknowst to us (the characters’ lives will continue)”, he said.
The series finale also features regular cast members Penelope Wilton as Isobel Crawley and Samantha Bond as Lady Rosamund Painswick.
In the last-ever episode set in 1925, writer Julian Fellowes ties up lots of loose ends.
Jim Carter, who is the period drama’s butler Carson, is promising the show will not end in tragedy like the 2012 Christmas special – when Matthew Crawley died.
According to the Radio Times, “romance is in the air” in the final Downton Abbey episode – though “for some the year’s end will prove bittersweet”, it goes on.
Michelle Dockery also spoke of the difficulty of saying goodbye to her character during an interview with Standard UK.
Mary attempts to build bridges but her sister Edith’s secret is still posing a threat.

The show, which was first screened in 2010, has become a global phenomenon, winning Golden Globe, Emmy, BAFTA, National Television and Screen Actors Guild awards.
