No injuries have been reported, fire officials said.
About 500 firefighters were battling a 1,100-acre blaze in Ventura County on Saturday morning.
Winds drove flames through drought-stricken vegetation and within striking distance of area beaches, in addition to “bumping against the roadway”, Ventura County Fire Capt. Steve Kaufmann said in a video posted to his department’s Facebook page.
The fire began late Friday northwest of the city of Ventura and immediately reached state Highway 101, a major route connecting Northern and Southern California.
PCH 1 north and south bound lanes are shutdown from the Solimar brush fire that started early Saturday morning in Ventura County, California December 26, 2015.
The fire is less than 10 percent contained and it will take at least three days to get it under control, fire officials said.
Four fixed-wing tankers were also on their way.
Similar conditions should prevail into Sunday, at which point a wind advisory should still be in effect.
Los Angeles County sent 30 firefighters and a helicopter to help fight the blaze.
Fire officials say the Solimar Beach community, where there are 30 homes, and a nearby campground are under a mandatory evacuation order. “We’re getting a bunch of embers in Solimar east”.
Officials said Saturday they did not know how the fire started.
