The tornadoes also killed six people in Tennessee and one each in Arkansas and Alabama, bringing the three-state total to 18.

The National Weather Service in Dallas-Fort Worth determined Sunday that the destruction left behind in hard-hit Garland was the work of an EF-4 tornado, which typically has wind gusts of between 166 and 200 miles per hour.

There was also a large tornado reported on Saturday evening just south of Dallas in DeSoto, Texas. At least three people who died were found in vehicles, he said.

That death toll went up by three since Saturday night.

In a Sunday morning briefing, Lt Pedro Barineau, of Garland police, said 600 buildings had been damaged.

And a snowstorm already burying the Panhandle and parts of Oklahoma won’t quit before dumping 8-16 inches over much of the region, with some isolates areas seeing 20 inches or more.

Most of the fatalities in Garland occurred near Interstate 30 and the George Bush Turnpike northeast of Dallas as multiple cars became caught in the severe weather.

Five tornadoes had been reported in Texas and one had been reported in Oklahoma, according to the US’ National Weather Service.

“METEOROLOGIST STEVE FANO SAID roughly eight tornadoes may have touched down across seven counties, though preliminary reports could not be confirmed until the morning”.

“All I heard was the roaring of the tornado, and my mom told us to get in the bathroom”, McMillian said.

In Alabama, heavy flooding continued Sunday following several days of heavy rain that began on Thursday.

According to Oncor, about 13,000 people are still without power.

The Dallas newspaper is reporting that law enforcement officials have requested more first responders from cities and towns nearby pursuant to the Dallas County Mutual Aid agreement.
