Cavs star guard Kyrie Irving will make season debut Sunday
On a pass from Kyrie Irving, Cavs guard Jared Cunningham threw down a ferocious alley-oop dunk with one hand that will likely make its way around the internet sooner than later.

Irving is regarded as one of Cleveland’s “Big Three” alongside LeBron James and Kevin Love. He made his season debut Sunday when the Cavs hosted the Philadelphia 76ers. He was on a tight restriction to play just four minutes per quarter, but not much more was needed against the Sixers, who lost their 10th straight game. That game will mark Irving’s real return. Philadelphia could only manage 86 points against the Cavs, including just 60 points after three quarters, as the defense played by Cleveland’s main rotation players was simply phenomenal.
Irving hadn’t played since breaking his left kneecap in the opening game of last season’s NBA Finals, an injury quickly followed by surgery in June.
“It was great because we were in the hallway before the game and I saw so many familiar faces”, James said.
Irving missed his first five shots of the game, but made his first basket on a wide-open layup on a turnover from Philadelphia.
“You wouldn’t wish injury on anybody, just going through those months, just being a prisoner of your own emotions and thoughts, that’s the hardest thing and getting yourself out of it and thinking about what’s the goal and task that’s important to you”, he said.
It is reasonable to expect the Cavs to deal with some discombobulation issues as they put out new lineups and adjust some roles. Cleveland led by 17 at the half and built the matgin to as many as 35 in the fourth quarter against the league’s worst team. Guard Bojan Bogdanovic added 13 points.
The Cavaliers closed out the first half on an 8-5 run and took a 55-38 lead into the halftime break.
Sixers coach Brett Brown said he has cut G Nik Stauskas’ minutes in part because Stauskas has struggled with his defensive effort in recent games. “I’m back”, Irving wrote simply on Twitter Saturday, as if he walked down to the corner post office. “I’ll probably go home and let all my emotions out, but I’m pretty excited to be back out there with my brothers”. I’ve known Kendall for a while now. In fairness, it isn’t just Irving who has missed time in the Cavs backcourt. For the time being, they’re remaining politically correct in front of microphones.
The blowout win allowed Irving to get a feel for real-time action, without the pressure of having to perform. Also the Warriors, especially Draymond Green, are known for prowling for motivation.

With Chris Brown’s “Picture Me Rollin’ ” filling the locker room, Irving, James and Iman Shumpert bobbed their heads in unison and did some small dance moves. Festive was the word of the moment.
