The latest mark to fall: The seventh main Star Wars film has just crossed the $1-billion mark in worldwide gross faster than any movie in history.
In North America, Disney said “The Force Awakens” posted record Christmas Day box office sales of $49.3 million.
That total adds to the film’s record-breaking opening weekend of $248 million, and brings its domestic gross to $544 million so far, according to figures reported by Rentrak. “It’s absolutely mind-blowing”.
The movie also set a record for Christmas Day sales, generating $US49.3 million, Rentrak said.
With a holiday week coming up, which will include New Year’s Day falling on a Friday, the Star Wars express should see another $175-200 million in sales stateside.
The Force Awakens has been setting records since its debut December 17.
Jurassic World also had the benefit of record box office receipts in China. It should become the 5 movie ever to cross $600 million sometime midweek. “The Force Awakens” made $1 billion in half the time it took another Disney hit franchise, Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, to take action this summer time.
“The Forces Awakens” is set 30 years after the defeat of the evil Galactic Empire in 1983’s “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”. The look at a stepfather’s attempts to outshine his wife’s stud of a first husband, came in second with a strong $38.8 million (roughly Rs. 256 crores) from 3,271 theaters. The Force Awakens pulled in an estimated $153.5 million over the weekend.

The Force Awakens has reportedly raked in $US1 billion-worth of cinema tickets faster than any other film in history. The $105 million (roughly Rs. 694 crores) action flick eked out $10.2 million (roughly Rs. 67 crores) from 2,910 venues.
