Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. Virginnia Tech Hokies
How ironic (and fitting) that a coach whose earmarks during his coaching career were defense and stellar special teams play would coach his final game and 280th win (238 at VaTech) in a contest that was a record-setting offensive showdown, with quarterback Michael Brewer playing in his final game as well.

Restaurants in Roanoke were packed with Hokie fans who watched Frank Beamer attentively as he coached his final game.
Virginia Tech sent Frank Bermer out a victor as the Hokies took care of Tulsa in a high scoring game, 55-53 Saturday in the Camping World Independence Bowl.
At this point, the game was looking like both teams would post 50+ points.
Gaskin, the game’s most valuable player, gained 170 yards in the second half on 17 carries after being held to 11 yards on nine rushes in the first half. To have hung around at one school and had the people around me, the administration, to be able to stay at one place in this business for 29 years, I’m amazed myself. “We know the motivation is going to be there, obviously, but we have our own motivations”. “I would have kicked myself out a long time ago”. As it turned out, the game became the main act for a few hours Saturday night, which is exactly what the Independence Bowl could’ve hoped for. Last time I came to Shreveport, I leave here a happy guy.
Erik Powell added field goals of 30 and 25 yards to help the Cougars win a bowl game for the first time since the 2003 Holiday Bowl.
Tech led by 18 midway through the fourth quarter, but promptly gave up 15 unanswered points to make it a field goal game with four minutes left to play. Tulsa was 6-7 in head coach Phillip Montgomery’s first year.
Among the records set on Saturday were most points in a first quarter by two teams (45), most points in a first half by two teams (76), most points in a game by two teams (107), most catches by a receiver (13), most yardage by a receiver (202) and most rushing touchdowns by a team (5). His 46-yard catch moved Tech to Tulsa’s 1 early in the second quarter, and came with cornerback Will Barrow draped all over him, resulting in a pass interference penalty that Tech declined. “We’ve got to continue to build it”. Tech scored on seven of their first eight possessions in the first half including a 67 yard punt return for a touchdown by Greg Stroman.
Tulsa hung around in the second half and eventually closed with-in 3, almost erasing a huge deficit thanks in part to 2 second half turnovers by the Hokies. “So we’re going to have a good time”. After 29 years his time with the Hokies has came to an end.
Quarterback Michael Brewer completed 23 of 37 passes for 344 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Evans threw three touchdown passes and D’Angelo Brewer ran for a 48-yard score and took off for a ten-yard touchdown – it wasn’t quite enough. The teams also combined for a record 947 total offensive yards, topping the previous record of 912 set by SC and Missouri in 2005.
