Tulsa vs. Virginia Tech
Michael Brewer threw for 344 yards, 227 of those to Isaiah Ford and Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer ended his legendary career with a win, as the Hokies topped Tulsa 55-52 Saturday in the Camping World Independence Bowl.

Yes, the affair was about making sure Coach Frank Beamer could do a goofy victory dance in the postgame locker game with his hat turned sideways one last time more than anything, but Ford has never been one to mask his desire to achieve lofty personal goals, too. The 76 combined points easily set the Independence Bowl first-half record.
Deon Clarke, second on the team in tackles, is among three players the coach suspended ahead of his final game at Virginia Tech. Tulsa and first-year head coach Philip Montgomery are seeking their first bowl win since the Golden Hurricane’s last postseason appearance three years ago.
Oakes then missed a 55-yard potential game-winning attempt at the end of regulation. The teams also combined for a record 947 total offensive yards, topping the previous record of 912 set by SC and Missouri in 2005.
In those 23 straight bowl games mentioned earlier, Beamer’s Hokies went 11-12.
If there was ever a game where this program needed a win, it was here on Saturday to send Beamer out a victor like he deserves, and they got the job done in that regard.
Tulsa: Senior wide receiver Keyarris Garrett is the second-leading receiver in the country with 1,451 yards.
Now, the Golden Hurricane are 14-point underdogs the highest of any team in the bowl season.
Both defenses regained their footing in the second half and Tulsa made things interesting late.
Washington 44, Southern Mississippi 31: Myles Gaskin broke a third-quarter tie with an 86-yard run and finished with a season-high 181 yards and four touchdowns to help the Huskies (7-6) beat the Golden Eagles (9-5) in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. I give them credit.
Gaskin, the game’s most valuable player, gained 170 yards in the second half on 17 carries after being held to 11 yards on nine rushes in the first half. The last time the Hawks won in New York City was their Atlantic 10 tournament victory over VCU, but now they have won five in a row and are 9-2 for the first time since 2004.
“We felt like we could run the ball and, in turn, we felt like we could get some time in the pocket to extend the ball downfield”. Tulsa’s Dane Evans tossed for 374 yards and a trio of scores.
The 107 total points were an I-Bowl record, as were Ford’s 227 yards on 12 catches.
“They get an A-minus across the board”, head coach Phil Martell said of their start, their best since the 2003-04 season when they earned a top seed in the NCAA tournament.

Tulsa actually took a brief 7-0 lead on a 48-yard run by D’Angelo Brewer, who also added the final score of the brutal first half on a 10-yard run with 20 seconds remaining.
