Family of 55-year-old woman to hold vigil
Quintonio LeGrier, a 19-year-old college student, was also killed after his father called police because his son was being unruly in the family home.

Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Sunday that officers’ role in the shooting is being investigated by the city’s Independent Police Review Authority.
Quintonio LeGrier, 19, was killed early Saturday by police responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment on the city’s West Side, along with downstairs neighbour Bettie Jones, 55.
MARTIN: So the police department is acknowledging that shooting Jones was a mistake.
Melvin Jones, facing camera, hugs Robin Andrews, both brothers of Bettie Jones, 55, in Jones’ li … She should not have to be shot down just coming to the door.
“She was a lovely woman”, said Jacqueline Walker, a friend of Jones’.
The West Side tragedy was the first of two police shootings Saturday. Walker asked. “It’s ridiculous”.
Several people who spoke wore T-shirts reading, “Rahm Failed Us”.
LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, told the Chicago Tribune that police didn’t have to react the way they did.
Glover added that her family is likely to file a lawsuit against the city. “I used to watch the news daily and I would grieve for other mothers, other family members”. Police said Jones “was accidentally struck and tragically killed” by bullets fired by a police officer responding to a domestic disturbance call at her building’s address.
An autopsy Sunday by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office determined she had been shot three times, with the fatal wound to her chest. The statement released by the department said the officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days while “training and fitness for duty requirements can be conducted”. It isn’t clear how many officers responded or how many times the pair were shot.
IPRA spokesman Larry Merritt declined comment on the shooting. He said Saturday it was “very early on in the investigation” and he couldn’t release further details. When the father returned to his second-floor apartment early Saturday, the son appeared to be a “little agitated”, Antonio LeGrier said. Around 4:15 a.m., the elder LeGrier said he heard loud banging on his locked bedroom door and that his son said, “You’re not going to scare me”. Jones was trying to intervene between LeGrier and police when she was shot, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Mr LeGrier struggled with mental health issues and was threatening his father with a baseball bat, relatives told the Chicago Tribune.
MARTIN: Does the young man’s mother – Quintonio LeGrier’s mother – does she agree that the son was combative?
“I identified myself as the father and I held my hands out”, he said.
Jones’ daughter, Latisha Jones, told the Sun-Times she woke up when she heard gunshots. He was a good student, family members said, and was majoring in electrical engineering at NIU. But before that happens, she said, they plan to join marches downtown to demand police accountability. But he never had combative behavior.
Recently, Cooksey said, her son had started to change, though he was still happy. He’s not an angry child.
They are – they say that the Independent Police Review Authority will be looking into this.
Emanuel’s office said in a statement Saturday that IPRA would share its evidence with the county prosecutor’s office. “When do we get answers?” she said.
High-profile killings of black men by police officers since mid-2014 have triggered waves of protest – including in Chicago, the country’s third-largest city – and fuelled a civil rights movement under the name Black Lives Matter.
That case contributed to Garry McCarthy losing his job as Chicago’s police superintendent and spurred calls for Emanuel to resign.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel is on vacation in Cuba, WLS said, but his office released a statement after the shooting. The mother of five, who loved church and music, will be remembered during a vigil at 2 p.m. Sunday in front of the apartment where Jones was killed in the 4700 block of West Erie in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

A recent investigative project by The Washington Post found that in the first half of the year, “police have shot and killed 124 people…in the throes of a mental or emotional crisis”.
