Star Wars Races Past $1 Billion In Record Time
Prior to this, the previous record holder was Universal’s Jurassic World which managed to hit $1 billion in 13 days, so it looks like Star Wars managed to beat it by a hair.

It brought in a galactic $NZ347 million in North America over its opening weekend, besting previous record-setter Jurassic World, and set worldwide opening-weekend records in Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe.
The skyrocketing success of the latest “Star Wars” has stoked United States film industry hopes that struggling theaters can thrive in the face of a growing shift to online video streaming. Star Wars: The Force Awakens won’t see a China bump until it releases on January 9th.
“We are rewriting the record books every day”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Rentrak.
This weekend alone, The Force Awakens secured the biggest Christmas Day of all time, raking in $49.3 million and more than doubling Sherlock Holmes’ 2009 record of $24.6 million.
Everyone predicted that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would do well, but the movie is doing even better than expected.
“‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ posted an estimated $133.3 million in its second weekend of overseas release from all territories worldwide except China representing approximately 75 percent of the global marketplace”, it said. BoxOffice.com was predicting $US163 million for the weekend for “The Force Awakens”.
Finally, Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight got a limited release with a 70mm roadshow release in 100 theaters that was good enough to land it in the Top 10 with a haul of $4.5 million, which shakes out to a location average of $45,366.
According to TheWrap, second place in the crowded weekend at the box office went to “Daddy’s Home”, the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg team-up whose $38.8 million would be normally have been near to a record.
In third with $17.5 million was another premiere, “Joy”, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.
Lastly, “The Big Short” confidently expanded into wide release with $10.5 million, with Paramount’s platform strategy for the movie working quite nicely; while “Sisters” quietly held strong, pretty much showing a 0% drop in its second weekend.

It’s a comeback 10 years in the making.
