Downton Abbey beats Strictly Come Dancing in Christmas Day ratings battle

She said: “Downton Abbey ended at season six because the producers and writer wanted to close the show on a high and that has been clearly demonstrated with the Downton Abbey finale on ITV being the most-watched show on television across all broadcasters on Christmas night”.
In the past two years, BBC comedy Mrs. Brown’s Boys was the top-rated show on Christmas Day in the overnight ratings.
The cast, which includes Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery, finished shooting the final episode of the period drama in August (15) but were not allowed to keep any of the props from the show.
Downton Abbey was scheduled against the BBC One soap previous year, but t he Walford-set show triumphed with an overnight average of 7.5 million viewers.
Over its six seasons, Downton Abbey has won a host of accolades, including numerous Emmy Awards.
Earlier on in the day, Christmas movie fearless had 5.5 million viewers on BBC One in the afternoon and animated short Stick Man was seen by 6.3 million.
The Downton finale went head to head with EastEnders, which pulled in 5.7 million viewers for the same 8.45pm slot.
But if this isn’t enough Downton to see you through, ITV are screening a special Bafta Celebrates Downton Abbey, which was aired on Monday, December 21.
But drama unfolds when the community prepares for a televised carol concert and it becomes apparent that Sister Monica Joan has gone missing.
On Channel 4, a kids spin-off of Gogglebox, Gogglesprogs, had 2.6 million viewers.
