Teams are 6-7 when choosing OT kickoff
Bill Belichick elected to have his team kick off after winning the overtime coin toss, and the Jets (10-5) took advantage of the opportunity immediately, driving down the field 80 yards for the game-winning touchdown to cap a 26-20 win over the Patriots (12-3).

It was fitting that receivers made some of the most decisive plays in the Jets 26-20 overtime win over the Patriots Sunday at MetLife Stadium. He’s had a great season in tandem with Brandon Marshall and the Jets will make the playoffs if they beat the Bills in Buffalo.
“Whatever coach decides, that’s what we’ll do”, Brady said.
New York Jets wide receiver Eric Decker (87) catches a pass for a touchdown in front of New England Patriots’ Malcolm Butler (21) during the overtime period of an NFL football game Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, in East Rutherford, N.J…
Neither Fitzpatrick nor Brady did much in the first half on Sunday, besides Fitzpatrick’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Marshall after the two-minute warning that gave the Jets a 10-3 halftime lead.
“I just thought we would be able to choose the direction we kicked off from”, Slater said. Jackson had seven touches, as did James White, who scored the game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter. Fitzpatrick passed for two third-down conversions during the drive, which he capped with a 2-yard pass to Marshall. Not only did the Jets come out and play with a sense of urgency, but the fact that they were able to close out the game – which they didn’t do in their first meeting of the season – shows a clear sign of growth and maturity.
“It was a good win, like I said, three of the last four weeks we’ve been fighting and winning these types of games, so to win one against a quality team like that at our place it helps out”, Bowles said in his post-game press conference. “We have to work hard this week and go to Buffalo with a million different story lines there”.
But then, a puzzled-looking Slater, asked Blakeman: “Hey, we won”.
The Jets believed they would make the Patriots pay for having the audacity to kick it to them first in overtime.
The Falcons and Jets weren’t the only teams to pull off upsets. As for Slater, I’m happy, for his sake, that Belichick accepted responsibility for the awful, horrible, no good, very bad decision to kick off at the start of overtime because it would be a crying shame if the man who has been the best special teamer in the National Football League for several years now was remembered only as being the guy who bungled an overtime coin toss. But the Jets’ two non-comeback wins during the current streak were lopsided routs of the sub-.500 Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans, which is another indication this is no longer 1993, or 1997, or 2000. The 6-foot-4 veteran finished with a game-high eight receptions for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns against a back line that was without safeties Patrick Chung and Devin McCourty. The former acquired the three big stars in Sunday’s game: Fitzpatrick, receiver Brandon Marshall, and cornerback Darrelle Revis.
He said he was not trying to “portray” the Patriots at all. The Jets would win a tie with Denver because of a better conference record (8-4/7-5 to 7-5/6-6). That broke the mark of 93 set by Jets’ Ring of Honor member Al Toon in 1988.
Marshall made another TD catch on the Jets’ first series of the second half. Against the Broncos in 2013, Belichick took the wind in OT. After a short run, Fitzpatrick found Quincy Enunwa, who had a ball go off his fingertips in the fourth quarter, for a short pass that Enunwa turned into a 48-yard gain to the Patriots’ 30. He began hobbling after planting the left leg and ended up writhing in pain on the ground. “You can’t help but feel that way with them because of who they are and what they have done, the quarterback (Tom Brady), the coach (Bill Belichick)”.
Sunday was his ninth 100-yard performance of the season, matching a team record set by Don Maynard in 1967, and the 43rd such game of his career. This was the most significant Jets win over the Patriots in five years.

“We knew this would be a playoff-like atmosphere against a playoff-like team”, Harmon said.
