Families of 2 say killings by police must stop
The investigation was launched after the release of video last month showing white officer Jason Van Dyke shooting 17-year-old Laquan Macdonald, who was black.

According to the LeGrier family, in comments to the local WLS television station, the young man had mental problems but he was not aggressive.
Fifty-five-year-old Bettie Jones, left, and 19-year-old Quintonio Legreir.
She leaves behind children ranging from ages 19-38. She ran to the hallway to find her mother bleeding on the floor.
Bettie Jones’ brother, Melvin Jones, told the Tribune that his sister celebrated “an excellent” Christmas at her apartment Friday with about 15 other relatives. “I had to keep checking for a pulse”.
But their deaths come at a tense time for city, which is now the focus of nationwide anger at police shootings. The families want answers. The source also said investigators were looking into whether any officer had a Taser.
They say Mayor Rahm Emanuel needs to step up and improve the situation with police.
On Saturday, December 26, 2015, at approximately 4:25 a.m., 11th District Harrison officers responded to a domestic disturbance on the 4700 block of West Erie St. Upon arrival, officers were confronted by a combative suspect resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon fatally wounding two individuals. Chicago Congressman Bobby Rush also released a statement in response Saturday’s shootings. The statement acknowledged the accidental shooting of Jones, “The 55-year-old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed”.
“This family is absolutely devastated”, the Rev. Marshall E. Hatch of a West Garfield Park church said in a statement early Sunday, adding that the shooting showed how “deeply dysfunctional the relationship is between this department and its citizens”.
A prayer vigil for Jones is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. It is unclear how and where Jones was shot. “Today, I am grieving myself. They took his life”, LeGrier’s mother Janet Cooksey told the Tribune. His son was banging on his bedroom door with the metal bat. The bodies were laying in the foyer inside, his son already dead with seven bullet wounds, his tenant gasping her final breaths with a gunshot wound to her neck.
Antonio LeGrier had reportedly told Jones not to open the door until police arrived; he heard gunshots while on his way to the front door, along with the responding officer yelling “no, no, no”, the Daily News reported.
Others who spoke said police should have used stun guns or other nonlethal methods if they felt they needed to subdue LeGrier, a college student home for holiday break.
Jones’ cousin, Evelyn Glover Jennings, added that she wanted a thorough investigation. “Her blood is crying out from the grave saying, ‘Evelyn, avenge me'”.
LeGrier’s father, Antonio LeGrier, called the police early Saturday morning when, according to reports, his son became “agitated”. “These questions and many others require immediate answers”.
He was subsequently shot and killed. She had five children. The family of Jones have hired an attorney. LeGrier’s neighbor Betty R. Jones was also killed, reports indicate.

“Anytime an officer uses force the public deserves answers”, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement. He said his son tried to bust the door open, but he kept him from doing so and called police. What are they trained for? A mistake we’ve seen made by so many people in the past who truly believed police were there to serve and protect. I mean, my son was an honor student.
