Boko Haram Islamic extremists struck the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri for the first time in months Monday with rocket-propelled grenades and multiple suicide bombers, witnesses said.
The attack comes as Nigeria’s government says it has contained the Islamic uprising that has killed 20,000 people in six years and driven 2.3 million people from their homes.
CALM has been restored in Maiduguri where some suicide bombers meant to carry out attacks.
A statement by Anka, said based on intelligence available to troops, suspected suicide bombers were waylaid at three entrances into Maiduguri.
Buhari further accused the immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan of deliberately provoking Nigerian soldiers into committing mutiny and later turned round to arrest and prosecute them. “Those who saw them said they were two women who began to scream as the bombs were about to go off”.
Spokesman of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Abbas Gava, had earlier informed LEADERSHIP that the gunmen were making an attempt to invade Maiduguri but were intercepted at Aladuwari village where they exchanged fire with soldiers.
Soldiers engaged them, the reports said, and as people were fleeing a woman ran into a neighbouring area yelling “Boko Haram, Boko Haram”. When people gathered, she detonated herself, according to village head Bulama Isa.
