More than a dozen tornadoes touched down as far north as MI, destroying or severely damaging homes and businesses. Search teams have been combing through damaged buildings in the affected states, the situation complicated by the fact many people may be away for Christmas. At the very least 15 people have been killed within the states of Mississippi, Tennessee & Arkansas since Thurs., officers stated.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says dozens of people are being treated for injuries after Wednesday’s tornado outbreak.
Heavy rain already is falling in areas stretching across Alabama, from the MS state line west of Tuscaloosa to the Georgia state line east of Anniston.
Four people died in Benton County, two in Marshall County and one in Tippah County, authorities said.
Isolated severe thunderstorms were expected to continue early Thursday from Louisiana through Kentucky, up to Washington D.C. and eastern Pennsylvania, the National Weather Service said. The people were seen moving outside their homes with their belongings.
Green said she was unsure of whether any neighbors had been injured or killed down the block where several homes were destroyed.
Along Mississippi Highway 7 close to Johnson’s house, headlights from passing cars illuminated downed tree limbs, slabs of plasterboard and wooden beams that had been turned into projectiles.
Meanwhile, officials said Texas and Oklahoma could be hit with a “historic blizzard”, bringing up to 16in (41cm) of snow.
He said: “The chimney is the only thing that saved us really”. High winds and heavy rain caused a large tree to become uprooted and fall on the house, trapping an 18-year-old woman and an 18-month-old toddler. Weather forecasters from the National Weather Service warned that a strong storm crossing the central part of the state could produce hail and winds of more than 40 miles per hour.
An additional person was also reported missing in Benton County, leaving two people in that region unaccounted for after storms socked the state on Wednesday, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said.
The unseasonably warm, severe weather also was responsible for seven deaths in MS and one in Arkansas.
In nearby Como, at least two homes were damaged.

The threat of severe weather in U.S. just before Christmas is unusual, but not unprecedented, said Greg Carbin, a meteorologist at the national Storm Prediction Center.
