Panthers’ bid for ideal season ends with loss to Falcons
500 this season under Dan Quinn, and the Panthers are no longer undefeated.

Newton finished the game with an unremarkable 17-of-30, 142 yards passing line.
The Panthers have a first-round bye locked up, but Newton was still disgusted with how his team performed in Atlanta. What changed? Well, Falcons receiver Julio Jones made a decision to become uncoverable, slicing through the Panthers secondary for 178 yards on nine catches, including one dramatic 70-yard touchdown that gave the Falcons (8-7) a 14-10 third-quarter lead.
The Boss Gets the Juice Flowing: Prior to opening kickoff, Arthur Blank walked into the Falcons locker room and, instead of speaking to the players, reportedly did a dance that got everyone pumped up.
After that, Carolina’s only points came on two second-half field goals from Graham Gano. The victory kept alive Indy’s faint hopes to win the AFC South. The Dolphins had a first-and-goal at the 5 with 40 seconds left, but after three consecutive incompletions, rookie center Jamil Douglas snapped the ball prematurely, and Ryan Tannehill was sacked by three Colts. He was double-covered on the play by Cortland Finnegan and Luke Kuechly, but a nickel cornerback and a linebacker were not enough against Jones, who, as Finnegan fell down, reached over Kuechly’s hands to grab the ball and run it in for the score. That didn’t go so well.
With Peterson relaxing on the sideline, Jerick McKinnon rushed for two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 68-yard romp through a disinterested defense with the temperature down to 11 degrees. Their first set of downs would have resulted in a three and out, but an unnecessary roughness flag on some post-whistle action from Charles Tillman gave the Falcons a first down on their own 30. And Cam was running up and down the sidelines.
And those offensive issues are things to worry about down the stretch, along with injuries. “But you see, they didn’t handle themselves with class the first time we played [when Carolina won 38-0]”.
“I can only speak for myself, because I’ve now gone against the Falcons 19 or 20 times in my life, so I know exactly what can happen in these types of division games”, said Panthers free safety Roman Harper, who has the gray hair to prove he’s been around awhile. The 6-9 Lions have won five of their last seven games.
It might be a blessing in disguise for the Panthers to finally drop one.
But now the Panthers must win next Sunday at home in the regular-season finale against Tampa Bay to guarantee that No. 1 playoff seed over surging Arizona (13-2). Meanwhile, Cortland Finnegan is doing his best to hold down the slot, but there’s a reason he was playing pickup hoops less than two months ago.
One reason to panic: The Panthers have given up big plays in three of their last four games. However, at the moment the Redskins may just want to enjoy the fact that they’re back in the postseason and whoever it turns out they face, what will be will be. Today the Falcons had more in stock for Carolina than they may of thought. Remember, most of the guys on this team are very young and it’s really all about the mental aspect in the playoffs.

This sucks, but the Panthers have time to turn their mindset around, and not let this loss impact a truly magical season. It needs time to regroup, and now that the pursuit of an unbeaten season is over, head coach Ron Rivera can start resting everyone….
