This is Frank Beamer’s last game as Virginia Tech Head Coach so motivation shouldn’t be an issue.

Virginia Tech senior linebacker Deon Clarke, the Hokies’ second-leading tackler, is among three players coach Frank Beamer suspended ahead of his final game as the team’s coach for the Independence Bowl on Saturday against Tulsa. “But I’m proud of our football team”. “I’m going to come back to Shreveport just for the hell of it”.
The Huskies won their last two regular-season games by a combined 97-17 over Oregon State and Washington State to become bowl eligible and then delivered Petersen’s first postseason victory in his two seasons at Washington. The Hokies picked up a first down on their ensuing drive, but ultimately were forced to punt, and the Golden Hurricane took over at the Tulsa 20 with two minutes left.
Now, the Golden Hurricane are 14-point underdogs the highest of any team in the bowl season.
Will Virginia Tech win this one big or is it Tulsa who pulls off an upset? That’s what makes this game so good. While Tulsa came up short on Saturday, it had 563 total yards, with Evans throwing for 374 yards and three TDs, D’Angelo Brewer rushing for 105 yards and Joshua Atkinson and Keyarris Garrett both posting over 100 receiving yards.
“These guys continued to play hard and made the plays when they needed to”, Beamer said.
The game was the career finale for Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, who announced in November he was retiring after 29 years in Blacksburg, Va. His first bowl game came in the 1993 Independence Bowl, when his Hokies defeated in 45-20. Arguably the most unsafe weapon will be receiver Isaiah Ford, who hauled in 12 receptions for 227 yards and a touchdown against Tulsa. He was voted the offensive player of the game. The Huskies failed in their bid to have a winning record for the first time since 2010. Between his scores, the Hurricane got points from Zack Langer (2 yards), Bishop Louie (9-yard reception from Dane Evans) and Redford Jones (29-yard field goal).
Brewer, playing just over 300 miles away from his hometown Lake Travis, Tex., was the most prolific he’s been all season, completing 23 of 37 attempts for 344 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.
Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer (12) looks for a open teammate while pushing to score against Tulsa during the Independence Bowl NCAA college football game in Shreveport, La., Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015. “College football has taken me through a lot of insane twists and turns….” “It’s something to be proud of, something to hang my hat on”. Three touchdown passes tied an Independence Bowl record and the yardage is second in the game’s history. Foster’s defense gave up the most points in a half since the 2003 Insight Bowl, which the Hokies lost, 52-49, against a California team led by Aaron Rogers.

“Coach Beamer was talking all season like, ‘We’re gonna get one, we’re gonna get one, ‘ ” Stroman said. “I can remember how cordial and friendly and delightful the people were here in Shreveport”.
