The Walt Disney Co. film, featuring a new cast of young actors with returning stars Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, took in $US153.5 million at USA and Canadian theaters in its second weekend, Rentrak Corp. said Sunday in a statement.
The previous record for fastest film to $1 billion came earlier this year with Jurassic World.
“The Force Awakens” also beat the former second weekend mark of $106 million set by “Jurassic World” in June by almost $50 million.
The Force Awakens also delivers a record-breaking year to Lucasfilm owner Disney as a whole, with the Christmas Day box office catapulting the Mouse House past $2 billion on the year for the first time in the studio’s history.
The numbers will most probably continue to sky-rocket once the movie releases in China in January. She even added that the second installment of the trilogy will be “darker” than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.
“For both the movie industry as a whole and for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this is a seminal moment in box-office history”. This news is also coming before it’s release in China, a crucial market that can determine earning the top spot among the top-grossing films.
Paramount’s “The Big Short” expanded from eight theaters to 1,585 locations on Wednesday, picking up $14.5 million for the five day period.
“Joy”, with Jennifer Lawrence, earned around $17.5 million and the re-imagining of “Point Break” a disappointment, only about 10 million in it’s first weekend.
