Searing temperatures and strong northerly winds throughout the day hampered firefighters’ efforts to control the blaze as aircraft and tankers battled the fire in dense bush.

Residents of the evacuated towns of Wye River and Separation Creek at Relief Centre in Apollo Bay, south of Melbourne, Australia, 26 December 2015.
Victoria Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley commended the residents for following the evacuation warning.
But many residents and holidaymakers were forced to flee, as festivities were abandoned when the scale of the threat became apparent.
Damage to homes at Wye River in the Great Ocean Road fire.
Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism chairman Wayne Kayler-Thomson says the Christmas Day bushfire that razed 116 homes has significantly affected the area’s most profitable time of the year.
“The fact we have had rain today across the state will not dramatically change anything”, he said, since very hot weather is predicted for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Wye River CFA captain Roy Moriarty said the community was well aware of the fire risks, and had contributed as volunteers and with donations over the years.
The area is one of Australia’s leading tourist areas, famed for its picturesque scenery and the weird rock formations visible just offshore in the blustery Southern Ocean.
More than 300 firefighters have spent the night fighting the 2000-hectare Jamieson Track blaze that has claimed at least 53 homes so far and threatened to advance on Lorne.
Other users just gushed over the adorable little koala commenting on how “cute” she was and how they hope other animals in the area will be kept safe and rescued. “In the country it is in, the fire will be monitored and worked on for weeks into January and even February”.
More than 170 people died during the worst bushfire catastrophe in Australia in Victoria.
