New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall (15) catches a pass for a touchdown in front of New England Patriots’ Duron Harmon (30) and Logan Ryan (26) during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, in E…
Belichick had made unconventional game management decisions in the past – going for it on fourth-and-2 against Peyton Manning or intentionally taking a safety – but this had shades of Marty Mornhinweg, kicking off in overtime when there was a chance the Patriots would never touch the ball.
“My first reaction was, ‘Stop ’em!'” said Marshall, thinking Tom Brady and the offense would have the ball first since the Patriots won the toss. One consolation is that the Patriots have already clinched a first-round bye, so they will have an opportunity to recover from some of their injuries no matter what happens in Miami, but the team can’t afford to put itself in a position where it needs to go on the road for an AFC Championship game. “We’re on to next week”. And, as a result, the Patriots no longer control their own destiny for home-field advantage in the playoffs. But he didn’t look sharp at all times against the Patriots (12-3). We could’ve done a few things better but it’s just part of learning.
Belichick had won an overtime game two years ago using the “take the wind” strategy.
“We’re not going to the playoffs, so the Super Bowl is next week for us”. It was the third time since the 2012 rule change a team chose to kick off for OT.
But as tends to be the case with the most polarizing franchise in all of professional sports, the topic of conversation following the game was all about the Patriots, and in particular Belichick’s curious decision after New England – which came back from second half deficits in each of its last three wins over the Jets – scored 17 of the final 20 points of regulation to climb out of a 17-3 deficit and force overtime. Did Slater tell the ref before the flip that the Patriots would kick off? But you goal in overtime and you decide to kick vintage Madonna once before back in 2013. But after Slater won by calling heads, the first words out of his mouth were, “We want to kick”. “We’ve got to get the next one to get in and that’s how we’ll view it. This is a fun run”. Belichick even informed referee Clete Blakeman of that decision prior to sending captain Matthew Slater out to call the coin toss.
So, what does NY have to do heading into Week 17 to make sure the season doesn’t end next weekend?
Tom Brady has been able to do a lot with very little this season but on the road against one of the top defenses in the league, there wasn’t much magic to be had on Sunday.
October 26, 1997: Denver wins at Buffalo, 23-20.
“It’s bittersweet”, Richardson said.
“I’m like, he had to mess it up”, the nickel cornerback said after the Jets” wild 26-20 victory yesterday at MetLife Stadium. “We’ve got to get past him”. And were you rooting for the Patriots or the Jets? A win would wrap up a playoff berth and move the Broncos to the No. 2 seed. Brady threw deep for the first time, connecting with Gronkowski, early in the quarter. But Brandon Marshall (eight receptions, 115 yards) caught two of them – giving him a career-high 13.
The Jets offense did nothing in the fourth quarter, but the defense kept them in front until late.

Stafford’s 1-yard TD pass to Johnson gave Detroit a 12-point lead one play after Tramaine Brock was called for pass interference in the end zone. New England yielded 5.3 yards per play on 27 rushes.
