Beamer goes out a victor as Virginia Tech tops Tulsa
But the 69-year-old coach wasn’t complaining, only laughing and smiling in the aftermath of Virginia Tech’s 55-52 victory over Tulsa in the Independence Bowl on Saturday night. Tech scored on seven of their first eight possessions in the first half including a 67 yard punt return for a touchdown by Greg Stroman.

Virginia Tech (7-6) set the Independence Bowl scoring record with 55 points, making it the second Independence Bowl trip the Hokies set the scoring benchmark, as they put up 45 against IN in the 1993 Independence Bowl. One of his catches was a 75-yarder for a touchdown, which marked the longest reception of his career.
Tulsa hung around in the second half and eventually closed with-in 3, almost erasing a huge deficit thanks in part to 2 second half turnovers by the Hokies. I probably credit it to back in the summer. “Usually when we score as many points as we did tonight, it’s usually a done deal”. The Hokies were up 52-31 when Brewer was picked.
WASHINGTON 44, SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 31: Myles Gaskin broke a third-quarter tie with an 86-yard run, and finished with a season-high 181 yards and four touchdowns to help Washington (7-6) beat Southern Mississippi (9-5). Certainly I have been critical of the coaching staff this year, but that does not mean – in any way shape or form- that I do not have the utmost respect and admiration for Coach Beamer.
In a game of big plays, all it would’ve taken was one to either win it for the Golden Hurricane or get them in a position to tie it with a field goal.
Finally, everyone had to answer questions about Beamer himself leading up to his final game as the Hokies head coach.
The coach announced in November he would retire after the season, and the team won three of its last four regular-season games to become bowl eligible.
There were times in Saturday’s game where the Hokies looked two touchdowns better, but the Golden Hurricane refused to go away making for one heck of an ending.
Story of the game: No matter the result, Beamer was always going to be the story. It was the lowest recorded attendance since 1988, but that didn’t change Beamer’s feelings of Shreveport before he said goodbye. He also became the first Tech receiver in school history to go over 1,000 yards in a season. Virginia Tech football has always been famous for their special teams, but also for Bud Foster’s defense. “We told them there at the beginning of the game that, if we could keep getting big chunks in the run game, then it would open things up and make it easier in pass protection. No. 1, we won for coach, and No. 2, we finished the right way for our players”.
The very first Virginia Tech football game that I was on campus for was one that I could not get tickets to – the infamous 2000 matchup against Georgia Tech when a lightning bolt smote Lee Corso’s rental auto.
Michael Brewer threw for 344 yards, Isaiah Ford had 227 yards receiving and Virginia Tech held off a Tulsa rally in the final minutes to send Beamer out a victor.
“The offensive line played great”, Brewer said. “Again, I realize how fortunate I’ve been to have lasted this long at Virginia Tech”. Evans is a junior with a year of eligibility left, so this Tulsa team should be a tough out next season. He led the Hokies on the ground with 84 yards on 16 attempts and recorded two touchdowns. McMillian rushed for 82 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Hokies’ rushing attack.

At Trinity Valley Community College this season, Evans passed for 3,164 yards and 38 touchdowns with only three interceptions.
