“We’re on a search and destroy mission right now”, he said.
“I was terrified and in a total shock”, Maks told CNN. Evacuation orders were lifted a few hours later. “We were very lucky, in worst case scenario our vehicle could have exploded”.
Ms Sumagaysay said reopening the highway is a top priority, which officials said they hoped to accomplish by Saturday afternoon.

California is parched under a historic drought, and Friday’s winds whipped flames through the dessicated vegetation.
LOS ANGELES, United States-A fierce brush fire raged in southern California Saturday, forcing evacuations and the closure of part of the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, as officials warned oil, power and rail installations were at risk. Fire officials could not be reached for an update. Though the highway has been opened, the region isn’t completely safe, cautioned Ventura County Fire Department Chief Norm Plott. Firefighters had dug containment lines around 70 percent of the blaze by early morning, Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Mike Lind Berry said.
Worse, the winds are expected to shift several times Saturday.
Firefighters said they battled and contained two small flare-ups overnight.
“It looks like the intense firefight is over”, Lindbery said Sunday afternoon, noting a weather change had brought beneficial cloud cover that shifted conditions in firefighters’ favor.
Wildfires have been a serious threat in southern California. About 60 homes in Solimar Beach were under mandatory evacuation orders.
Residents from as many as 100 homes that had evacuated from Solimar and Faria beaches were then allowed to return to their homes.
