Police Radio Traffic Releases New Details In Louisville Mall Disturbance
Brawls involving up to 2,000 people erupted in one of Kentucky’s largest malls on Saturday night, forcing the entire mall and businesses in the surrounding area to shut down, police said.

McDonald said the department always stations an extra police presence at the mall during the holidays, and on Saturday, there were six officers at the mall assigned to help mall security.
However, the teens tried to stop the police from shutting the doors, and more reinforcements were called upon to curb down the growing violence in the mall.
McDonald said officers can charge people who have been asked to leave with trespassing, but businesses like the mall also need to set policies that allow law enforcement to make those arrests.
“We were largely outnumbered, and our focus was on restoring order and dispersing the crowd”, he said.
The St. Matthews Police Department investigated several reports of shots fired inside and outside of the mall as well.
By the end of the night, four police departments had responded to get the situation under control in eastern suburban Louisville. Police planned to meet soon with mall management to discuss ways to prevent a recurrence of the unruly behavior, McDonald said.
The disturbances were caused mostly by unsupervised young people ranging from their early to late teens, McDonald said. A spokesperson for the mall said Sunday that the business was not yet ready to comment on the disturbances, The Courier-Journal reported. “And we were focused on the safety of patrons and of our fellow officers”. The fights didn’t appear organized, but McDonald believes juveniles used social media to come together in other areas of the mall after being dispersed. McDonald said he hadn’t heard that the mall would remain closed Sunday.
“It’s private property”, he said. One suggestion by police was a possible policy requiring juveniles under a certain age to be accompanied by a parent when at the mall.
Howard said he sometimes walks around the mall with his cousin while they wait to catch a Transit Authority of River City (TARC) bus, but he doesn’t usually use the mall as a place to hang out.
Matthews has been closed for the night after several disturbances.
