He died in Scottsdale, Ariz. Lemon also had otherworldly basketball skills, including halfcourt hook shots with astonishing accuracy and dazzling no-look passes well before the Magic Johnson era began in the NBA.

The virtuosic basketball star Meadowlark Lemon, renowned as the “Clown Prince of basketball” during his tenure with fellow court pranksters, the Harlem Globetrotters, has died.

The New York Times first reported Lemon’s death Sunday in Arizona, where he lived, which it said was confirmed by his wife Cynthia Lemon.

“God planted that dream in my heart as I sat right there in the Ritz Theater”, Lemon wrote. He joined the Globetrotters in 1954 at the age of 22 and stayed with the traveling show until 1978, appearing in more than 16,000 games in 97 countries.

In 1988 he started playing for Meadowlark Lemon’s Harlem All Stars.

After attending Florida A&M University, Lemon played during one of the Globetrotters’ overseas tours while serving in the Army, and requested a tryout with the team.

Lemon was inducted in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.

His feature film appearances include Modern Romance, Crash Island and The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.

Lemon is survived by his wife and 10 children.
