Storms have hit southern and central U.S. states over the Christmas holiday, unleashing floods and tornadoes that killed at least 41 people.

Nixon urged caution in northern Missouri, where snow, freezing rain and increasing wind gusts were expected to accompany a drop in temperatures.

Almost 1,300 flights were cancelled because of the bad weather conditions on Sunday.

A typical day sees about 150 cancelations and 4,000 delays.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Bishop said that a tornado of that strength is very rare in a metropolitan area.

That woman survived the tornado in a Rowlett neighborhood, but the entire roof of her two-story home was ripped off. The only part of the house that appeared to be spared was the master bathroom, where her brother-in-law took shelter on Saturday night.

“I think everyone understands now the gravity of what happened”, Anita Foster, spokeswoman for American Red Cross of North Texas, said on WFAA television. Tornadoes that swept through the Dallas area caused substantial damage and at least 11 people died either from the storm or related traffic accidents and dozens of people were injured. The weather service said damage indicated it was probably an EF-3 tornado, which has winds up to 165mph. An estimated 600 buildings were damaged, a lot of them single-family homes, and 15 others suffered injuries, according to the city.

Another three deaths were reported in Collin County, said Lt Chris Havey, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a disaster in four counties, including Dallas County which covers Garland, and Rockwall County which covers Rowlett, CNN reports.

In Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety says only a small section of the highway around Amarillo remains open.

He also said he couldn’t believe the “road was left in this condition” – snow-packed and icy – and that he had water, but not food. Texas State Trooper Cindy Barkley said Sunday evening that deteriorating conditions have forced authorities to also indefinitely close the highway for about 100 miles east of Amarillo to Oklahoma.

“The storm system will gradually pull away by Tuesday, but flooding and treacherous travel could (linger) into midweek”, the National Weather Service said. More than 180 roads in Missouri were closed Monday morning due to flooding. The victims included four “international soldiers” who died after they attempted to drive on a flooded roadway. Greene County authorities said two more fatalities there were associated with the flooding.
