There is an outbreak of norovirus cases in California, with 32 cases having been confirmed since October.
The norovirus, otherwise called as the winter vomiting disease, is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis.
Health officials said that the virus can spread after coming in direct contact with an infected person, by infected foods or liquids consumption, or by touching one’s mouth after touching a contaminated surface. That’s why it’s so important to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom, especially if you are sick.
Besides the Boston outbreak of the norovirus, more than 200 people were sickened by the virus aboard Royal Caribbean-owned cruise ships, and an outbreak of the norovirus in Seattle at the Russell Investments Center office building earlier in December affected approximately 200 people, according to CBS Seattle.
As per experts, if a person has had norovirus in the past, they won’t have antibodies to protect them from the newly found strain of the virus. The Orange County Health Care Agency said the school’s only cafeteria might have been the source of the outbreak.
The Wayne County Department of Health, Veterans and Community Wellness says they’ve been dealing with an recent increase in reports of gastrointestinal illness.
Amy Saupe, a foodborne disease epidemiologist at the Minnesota Department of Health said in a statement, “every few years, a new strain of norovirus emerges and causes many illnesses”.
One of the first outbreaks this year in California occurred in May at Sky Room, a Long Beach restaurant. The restaurant closed for four days in order to sanitize the restaurant and bar. Worryingly, persons who have sought treatment, can still be contagious up to two weeks or more even after recovery.
Be sure to always wash your fruits and vegetables; clean and disinfect food preparation equipment and services; and thoroughly cook all meats, fish and poultry, the health department says.
Symptoms of norovirus infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of taste, lethargy, weakness, muscle pain, abdominal pain, headache, and mild fever. Even though it’s associated to winter, it can present itself even in the summer, but the cold season seems to be its breeding ground and home.

According to California health officials, numerous outbreaks of the norovirus there have happened “at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities”. Norovirus Infection rates are rising so fast that officials have put out an alert for the Christmas holidays.
