New “Star Wars” film exceeds $1 billion mark in global box office
Of this weekend’s overall gross for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, IMAX grosses made up an estimated US$19mil.

Walt Disney said The Force Awakens crossed the billion-dollar mark today, accomplishing the feat in just 12 days.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has reached $1 billion at the box office, achieving the milestone with record-setting hyper speed. Unfortunately, it’s ridiculously hard to differentiate between fantastical “Star Wars” story lines and Florida’s news headlines, even for “Star Wars” actors.
January 9, 2016 – “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens in China, world’s second biggest movie market. The film has also the fastest to cross the $100, $200, $300, $400, and $500 million marks domestically, and is now $100 million shy of beating “Jurassic World” as the biggest movie of 2015 at home.
The film also set a new record for the highest Christmas Day gross with $49.3 million. The skyrocketing success of the latest “Star Wars” has stoked United States film industry hopes that struggling theaters can thrive in the face of a growing shift to online video streaming.
According to TheWrap, second place in the crowded weekend at the box office went to “Daddy’s Home”, the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg team-up whose $38.8 million would be normally have been near to a record.
A couple of holdovers rounded out the top five with Universal’s Sisters dropping nearly nothing from last weekend to an estimated $13.8M this weekend, bringing its cume to $37.1M.

The Hunger Games and Creed both managed to stay in the top 10 according to estimates with $5.3 and $4.6 million. It could be the expensive remake of Point Break, which bombed into 8th place with a gross of $10.2 million.
