Detectives from the police department’s Major Crimes Division and Bureau of Investigation were investigating, Hartman said.
There is a large police presence in the area.
As of early afternoon, no other body parts have been discovered, Hartman said. Police have not taken anyone into custody for questioning, according to Hartman.
Police say no other body parts have been found. Investigators are looking into missing persons reports in an attempted to identify the victim.
The medical examiner’s office also was alerted.
State Street is closed northbound between Chapel Street and Grand Avenue.
New Haven police spokesman Officer David Hartman said a resident made the grisly discovery late Wednesday morning.
Court Street is shut down between State Street and Artizan Street, over the railroad tracks. Police were unable to immediately confirm or deny that claim. Both a right and a left leg were found. They are presumably from one person, but that has not yet officially been determined.
Michael Fumiatti, of Madison, said that he commutes on Shore Line East and smelled something unusual on Monday. Near that fence is where the bottom part of two human legs were found.
