The Montreal Canadiens acquired goaltender Ben Scrivens from the Edmonton Oilers on Monday in exchange for forward Zack Kassian.

Kassian was the 13th overall pick by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2009 draft and was later traded to Vancouver for Cody Hodgson. Montreal has used rookie Mike Condon and backup Dustin Tokarski in his absence. In the NHL, Scrivens has suited up for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and Oilers. There is no timeline on when Price will return to the ice. While with the Canucks, Kassian was suspended eight games for swinging his stick and breaking the jaw of then Oilers centre Sam Gagner in a pre-season game.

Kassian was asked by the Habs not to report to the team’s AHL affiliate in St. John’s on Saturday. Seeing as $550,000 would represent 23.9 percent of Scrivens’ contract, it seems reasonable to assume that the Oilers retained that much money to make this a deal with absolutely no salary cap impact. He is an unrestricted free agent after the season.
