Elon Musk Rockets Back into First in Silicon Valley Space Race
“It’s quite shocking.” Musk said the landing appeared close to flawless and the company “could not have asked for a better mission or a better day”.

The mission was the first time an unmanned rocket returned to land vertically at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The SpaceX rocket also was much taller than the Blue Origin rocket.

“SpaceX believes a fully and rapidly reusable rocket is the pivotal breakthrough needed to substantially reduce the cost of space access”, the company says on its website. For the latest launch, the rocket stage flew to about 75 kilometers before turning around, leaving the rest of the rocket to deliver a package of satellites into low-Earth orbit.

SpaceX said landing the rocket was a secondary priority at the Monday launch.
Nonetheless the Falcon-9 flight, which also went twice as high as New Shepard, is a milestone towards reusing rockets.
SpaceX launches satellites into orbit and flies cargo to the space station. Some of those same engines performed a reentry burn to slow the rocket down, before lighting up again when the rocket touched down on the beaches of Cape Canaveral.
Musk has said the ability to return his rockets to Earth so they can be refurbished and reflown would slash his company’s operating costs in the burgeoning and highly competitive private space launch industry. It is the first time that billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX successfully recovered a rocket from an orbital flight.

Rival company Blue Origin, a space start-up founded by Amazon.com chief executive Jeff Bezos, nailed a similar return rocket landing test last month.
