Carrick: We are trying for Van Gaal
Under-pressure Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admitted that he did not know if he retained the backing of the club’s board after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Stoke City.

There has been a lot of speculation about job security of Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, especially now that the club has dropped its fourth straight game in the Premier League.
While refusing to confirm or deny whether he has received assurances from the United board, he did state: “I have said already in former press conferences that it is not always that the club has to fire or sack me.
Again we had many chances like in the last games and this time we scored two and didn’t concede one so we won and we’re very happy about that”.
“It is a bit disrespectful when people say the lads aren’t trying for the manager”, Carrick was quoted as saying by the BBC ahead of Monday’s match against Chelsea.
With the festive fixtures in EPL have started thick and thin, Louis van Gaal will hope his side are able to get up from the rot in form and get the better of Chelsea who haven’t lost in their last two games.
The incident came just days after the striker had organised a players’ meeting to try and rally around the Dutchman, but the embarrassing faux-pas is likely to deepen division within the squad at how players are being treated.
“He has this talent but he’s also now having a confrontation with the demands of the Premier League, which are much higher in the intensity of the game for 90 minutes”, the Dutchman said.
Van Gaal’s men will take on a Chelsea side languishing in 15th place and missing suspended striker Diego Costa.
There was an admission from the United manager that United had regressed since they momentarily topped the table with a 2-1 win at Watford last month.
“We didn’t dare to play the football that we can and I have analysed it as a outcome of the circumstances: the pressure that you have to cope with as a player group, as an individual player”, he said. “We have to cope with that and look for the solution”.
Van Gaal said after the match that his players were too scared of playing their best football, which is a startling admission given that this was hardly a Champions League final against Barcelona.
In fact, should United fail to win on Monday, they will end the year with their lowest points total in 26 years.
Van Gaal, who says he could quit, was at United’s training ground on Sunday.
