The film also achieved a record-setting second-weekend take – with an estimated 150 million dollars (£100.6 million).
This weekend, in what should come as no surprise to anyone, The Force was ridiculously strong at the box office again this weekend while a number of other films opened from extremely well to really poor over the Christmas weekend.
“Nothing will stand in our way”, Kylo Ren said in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. The Will Smith drama Concussion opened at #6 with an estimated gross of $11 million, which makes it the lowest wide release opening of Smith’s career.
The seventh instalment of the Star Wars series reached the $1.09bn mark after only two weekends, EW reported.

The hype for the next installment went on when new “Star Wars” cast Daisy Ridley opened up to Variety her experiences in filming the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and even shared some details on what fans should expect in the upcoming sequel.
In third with $17.5 million was another premiere, “Joy”, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. It takes #7 on the strength of its $10.5 million in weekend receipts.
On the limited release front, newcomer Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”, from the Weinstein Co., fared best with a 10th-place finish of $4.5 million.
