New England Patriots star accidentally gifts win to opposition
Ryan Mallet threw for a career-high 274 yards in his first start with Baltimore in leading the Ravens to one of the biggest upsets of this contentious rivalry.

In three of the past four games, Fitzpatrick has driven the Jets to a win in the final two minutes of regulation or overtime.
Can it get any better for the Jets?
“Cause we thought that was the best thing to do”, said the longtime Pats coach when asked about his decision to defer rather than receive.
Tom Brady and the Patriots can still clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs with a win at Miami in Week 17. Have to believe. That figured into the conversation when they were deciding whether an acute or except at the start of overtime.
The Patriots captains, including Matthew Slater, appeared confused by the question, though a replay suggests Slater said New England wanted to kick. In overtime, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick seemed to outsmart, well, Bill Belichick by winning the coin toss and choosing to defer. “That was the end of our decision making”. New York Jets defeat the New England Patriots 26-20 in OT. Belichick made sure that didn’t happen. “So I was just like, thanks, because we’ve got a special offense”.
His biggest play came in the third quarter, when quarterback Matt Ryan scrambled to his left and launched a prayer in Jones’ direction.
And it’s rarely had a happy ending for the Jets. Blakeman reminded him that he had already used up his choice, to kick. “I’m so proud of my teammates…. [I’m] excited that that’s kind of figured out at this point and that we do control our own destiny, but we do have to take care of business”.
The six teams in the NFC playoff field are set, with only seedings left unresolved.
New England Patriots outside linebacker Jamie Collins (91) runs for a touchdown after recovering a fumble by New York Jets’ Ryan Fitzpatrick during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, in East Rutherfo…
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – The Patriots gave the Jets the ball, and NY might carry it right into the playoffs. The Patriots offense has been wiped out by injuries, but Belichick has the best QB in National Football League history and chose not to give him the first shot with the ball.
Eric Decker’s 6-yard touchdown catch from Ryan Fitzpatrick on the first drive of overtime lifted the Jets (10-5) to their fifth straight win and into position to make the playoffs with a victory next week. Decker then did the MetLife Leap and disappeared into the stands in the arms of delirious Jets fans.
“It was thrilling”, Decker said. “Those are the moments you cherish and remember”.
There is precedent for the Patriots deciding to kick to open overtime. Instead, they lost in overtime when Coach Bill Belichick opted against receiving the extra-time kickoff. How about that dropkick against the Eagles. Brady pointed out that the offense had not played well against the Jets.
He said he was not trying to “portray” the Patriots at all. But on the second play of the Jets’ drive, Enunwa atoned for his earlier drop by taking a short pass up the left sideline for 48 yards.
Belichick coached a odd game. Fitzpatrick looked far too unstoppable at times, finishing 26 of 41 for 297 yards, three touchdowns and no picks, while Marshall terrorized the New England secondary, catching eight passes for 115 yards and two of those touchdowns.
Carolina (14-1) got the ball with 90 seconds left and no timeouts remaining. Belichick loves doubling up in those situations with back-to-back scores.
Belichick had done it once before, in 2013, but a hefty wind was involved against Denver.
On Sunday, they were facing a desperate Jets team playing at home that needed to win to keep its playoff hopes alive. “We wanted to come out here and get this win”.
The Jets look ready for anything.

The Panthers were shocked by Atlanta, 20-13, watching their bid for an undefeated season evaporate when they suffered their first regular-season loss in 13 months. Detroit will have to devote $24 million of its salary cap next season to retain Johnson, who caught just two passes in the previous two games, unless they restructure the perennial All-Pro’s contract.
