4 soldiers among 24 dead in massive storm

The wet and snowy conditions come after a Christmas Day of unseasonable warmth on the East Coast, with record high temperatures set or tied in several cities including NY, while a tornado hit Alabama late on Friday afternoon, damaging several homes. Almost half of those flights were in Dallas.

After Mettenberger threw an interception, the Patriots tacked on the final field goal of the game, making the score 33-16. And it was a hit from Watt a year ago that injured Mettenberger’s shoulder and ended his season three weeks early.

It’s the latest of a succession of freakish winter-weather events across the country that could include heavy snow and massive flooding Sunday from north Texas through eastern Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, western Arkansas and parts of Missouri. In Missouri, emergency workers had evacuated residents from homes and conducted dozens of water rescues, Governor Jay Nixon said on Sunday. Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia earlier took similar measures.

At least 11 people died and dozens were injured in apparently strong tornadoes that swept through the Dallas area and caused substantial damage this weekend, while five people died in a flash flood in IL. At least one vehicle flipped and landed upside down near a highway overpass.

But it hasn’t helped to lose players such as wide receiver DeSean Jackson – now with the Redskins – and running back LeSean McCoy. It’s become a rallying cry for the Redskins and their fans, who continued the chant for several minutes after the game.

“The little boy was hanging on to the back of the vehicle”, Tyler said Saturday.

Hardest-hit was the Dallas suburb of Garland, where authorities confirmed eight fatalities after a tornado packing winds of up to 200 miles (320 kilometres) per hour bore down on the city.

A confirmed tornado struck the southeastern part of Garland Saturday night around 6:45 pm. Aerial footage taken as day broke showed some homes completely flattened, while others had roofs blown off and windows shattered, curtains fluttering in the wind.

“We’re going to look at every house and every vehicle to try to make sure we find everybody”, Garland Mayor Douglas Athas told CNN.

Tornadoes are most likely to occur during spring and summer, but not during winter season.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a statement Sunday night that as many as 600 homes were damaged in Rowlett.

Severe weather that created a series of deadly tornadoes and flash flooding that killed at least 43 people across the Midwest and South was expected to continue Monday as governors across the affected regions declared states of emergency.

Martinez activated the National Guard for disaster assistance, and urged residents to stay off the roads.

Authorities even closed down I-40, a major highway linking the city of Albuquerque with neighbouring Oklahoma. The Texas governor said nearly the entire portion of the state north of Interstate 10, which runs through Houston and San Antonio, was already dealing with challenging weather conditions.

Authorities said eight people were killed amid severe flooding in Missouri, including four foreign soldiers temporarily stationed at Fort Leonard Wood. “Driving around the area, you can see that it’s total devastation”, Barineau said.

With more severe weather expected across the central United States, forecasters are warning of airport delays and flooded roads as travelers return home after the Christmas holiday.

And one person drowned Sunday in Alabama floodwaters, local officials said. The state of Texas is seeing heavy rains, floods and bracing for what is feared will be an “epic” snowstorm.

“The storm system will gradually pull away by Tuesday, but flooding and treacherous travel could linger into midweek”.

Heavy snow was forecast from New Mexico all the way to Iowa, National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Oram told USA TODAY. More than 180 roads in Missouri were closed Monday morning due to flooding.
