They went into the game facing the division rival Falcons with the Falcons needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Carolina’s bid for an undefeated season has come to an end in Atlanta. Ryan completed third-down passes to White and Jacob Tamme and had a key 7-yard run on another third-down play. That wasn’t the most disrespectful part of the game, 2 minute warning in the 4th quarter, the Panthers made a decision to take a team photo which clearly pissed off the Falcons. Cam Newton drives the team down on their first touch and runs into the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
Carolina (14-1) got the ball with 90 seconds left and no timeouts remaining.
Julio Jones caught a 70-yard touchdown pass to spark Atlanta’s 20-13 win. In the most critical defensive stand of their entire year, for pride if nothing else, the Falcons held strong, stripping Newton of the ball and running out the clock to claim the win.
“Quite honestly”, Rivera said, “we didn’t coach to our abilities or play to our abilities”. Newton wasn’t sharp and did not help his MVP candidacy.
It was Vic Beasley’s finest game of the season by far, as he held Cam Newton to short yardage multiple times and then came up with the game-deciding sack of Newton, one that resulted in a fumble.
Newton threw for 142 yards and ran for 46 yards, including an 8-yard scoring run to cap the 14-1 Panthers’ opening drive.
Carolina’s 13 points set a season low.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Keita Bates-Diop scored a career-high 24 points and Ohio State won its fourth straight with a 73-57 victory against SC on Sunday night.
If the 1972 Dolphins celebrated yesterday following the Panthers’ loss to the Falcons, I say good for them. “We put them in third-and-long situations and we just couldn’t get to the quarterback”.
In the penultimate week of the regular season the Panthers were aiming to move to 15-0, but the Falcons, fighting for their playoff lives, had other ideas.
“Just how we drew it up”, joked Falcons coach Dan Quinn.
Matt Ryan threw for 306 yards and one touchdown for the 8-7 Falcons, who are stay in the playoff hunt pending Minnesota’s game tonight against the visiting Giants.
The Arizona Cardinals produced a dominant display at home to destroy the Green Bay Packers 38-8 and secure a first-round playoff bye and a ninth-straight win.
Jones had nine catches for 178 yards, taking his matchup with Carolina cornerback Josh Norman.
– Third-string running back Ka’Deem Carey caught a touchdown pass and scored on a 1-yard run to help the Bears stop a three-game losing streak with a 26-21 victory over Tampa Bay.
Many including myself have questioned if Matt Ryan still has the capability to be the player he once was and if he should remain the Falcons undisputed starter due to poor play during the six game losing streak. “They made more plays”.
I really thought that would happen in either the Divisional Round of the playoffs or the NFC Championship Game, but instead, we got a little sneak peek of what’s to come.
Ryan redeemed himself on the following drive, marching the Falcons back down the field and setting up a 36-yard field goal by Shayne Graham that put the Falcons up 17-13 with 2:23 to play. Norman recovered the fumble, setting up Gano’s 47-yard field goal that cut Atlanta’s lead to 14-13.

Atlanta Falcons free safety Charles Godfrey (30) reacts to breaking up a Carolina Panthers pass during the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, in Atlanta. He scored on an eight-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. We knew it. Yet we know what we’re capable of…. “I played on a Saints team in 2009 that lost the last three games of the regular season, and we won the Super Bowl”.
-LB Paul Soliai injured his calf early in the first quarter and was unable to return.
