ISIS is being defeated in the key stronghold of Ramadi, with Iraqi forces reportedly inside a former government compound.

But British military operations still mostly focused their attention in neighbouring Iraq.

Iraqi troops were preparing on Sunday to make a final push to retake the city of Ramadi from Isil, hoping to deal a major blow to the jihadists in the country.

Lt. General Abdul-Ghani al-Asadi, commander of Iraq’s anti-terrorism contingent, said that troops would be in control of Ramadi in a matter of days.

He, in particular, praised the Shiite militia forces for their role in the liberation of Ramadi. “There are still neighbourhoods under their control and there are still resistance pockets”. ISIS control of Fallujah, located between Ramadi and Baghdad, would likely be threatened if the supply route from Ramadi was cut off.

The militants captured Ramadi in an assault earlier in May this year. Government airplanes dropped leaflets urging the city’s tens of thousands of residents to evacuate before impending military operations.

Soldiers advanced in the Hoz neighbourhood that houses the provincial government compound, the target of an attack that started on Tuesday.

He explained that although the Iraqi forces were making slow progress, “there are advances [on the ground] and the Iraqi forces are surrounding what’s left of Isis” in Ramadi.

ISIS emerged from the chaos of an ongoing civil war in Syria as an anti-government faction fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad. He said Iraqi forces were now advancing from the south and west to close in on the remaining militant-held neighborhoods.

The ISIS group had an estimated force of around 400 fighters to defend central Ramadi a week ago.
