How to Return Holiday Gifts
Timing is Key: Return lines can be lengthy the day after Christmas, so pick a time when the store is unlikely to be crowded. The best advice to make sure you can return a gift?

To ensure a hassle-free process, make sure items are in their original packaging, keep tags in place on clothing or shoes and come with a receipt if you can, the National Retail Federation recommends.
Bring A Photo ID: Many stores will scan your driver’s license or other government ID to ensure that shoppers aren’t taking advantage of the system if they want to make a return without a receipt.

Keep electronics and similar products in the box, and some stores may require the original packaging to still be sealed. But House of Fraser and TK Maxx will not refund or exchange returns without a receipt. Most large retailers post their policies online.

You need to bring your gift into a store to exchange it for a gift card or another item. JCPenney.com states that without a receipt, the retailer will refund you an item’s “lowest selling price within the last 45 days issued in the form of a merchandise return voucher”.
Returns can tricky. And I’m not just talking about the grimace on Aunt Karen’s face when she comes for a holiday visit and doesn’t see the Christmas wreath she gave you. Items received as a gift must be returned in stores.
Some presents can easily be exchanged for something more to your taste than the Snuggie, cheap cologne or ugly sweater you receive in a holiday gift exchange, even if you don’t have a receipt. Knowing those laws will help you navigate your in-store or online returns and determine if your return experience either fun or frustrating.
Some retailers attempt to prevent retail fraud involving the return of used or stolen goods by enacting strict return policies. L.L. Bean also handles returns by mail, but unless you have an L.L. Bean Visa card, the retailer will deduct $6.50 from your refund for shipping charges. The store has extended the return period for items purchased between November 1, 2015 and December 31 2015 to January 15. The day limit gets bumped up for video game consoles, DVD players, cameras, and camcorders, reaching a 30-day limit. There’s a 90-day window for returns.

You have 30 days to get a gift card if you have a gift receipt. Items with a gift receipt are eligible for exchange or refund at the gift receipt price in the form of a gift card.
