“The weapon has been recovered”.
The woman and the male suspect, reported to be 86, were both residents of the care home, police confirmed.
“I was aware that there were other staff behind me and that there were other residents nearby and all I can remember thinking is somehow I’ve got to get the full out of that man’s hand”.
The homes offers specialist care in areas including Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, head and brain injuries, deafness, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and visual impairment.
The couple were residents in the home, which specialises in caring for people with dementia.
“Walton-on-the-Naze is supposed to be one of the most peaceful and tranquil places there is – elderly people want to be in a peaceful and tranquil environment”.
One told the Gazette: “We just can’t believe it. You would never expect something so very bad to happen inside a care home”. You needed a security code to get in.
The home cares for 57 residents who pay up £575 a week.
Early reports indicate she was shot.
“With the age of the man, it’s got to be something left over from the Second World War”.
The dead woman’s next of kin has been informed.
Local residents said they heard “two or three shots” around the time of the shooting at 9am.
