Mathews blames `pathetic` batting display for Lanka’s humiliating loss
Martin Guptill smashed the fastest fifty by a New Zealand player as the Black Caps chased down a target of 118 runs in just 8.2 overs to complete a comprehensive victory over Sri Lanka in the second One-Day International in Christchurch.

Sri Lanka were eventually all out for 188 in 47 overs on a wicket that promised runs galore, and New Zealand knocked off the target easily.
His momentum was briefly arrested by some well-placed Kulasekera yorkers and it took another five balls for Guptill to reach his 50, one behind the world record of 16 held by South African De Villiers.
Instead, Sri Lanka have been bundled out for 117 in 27.4 overs on Monday with not one of the prime order, together with opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, who has amassed greater than 10,000 profession one-day worldwide runs, scoring greater than 17.
The hosts have taken a 1-0 lead in the series with a seven-wicket victory in the first match that was also played at the same venue.
Dilshan (nine) top-edged the ball to midwicket where Nicholls celebrated his global debut with a catch above the head, Thirimanne faced 19 deliveries for one run and Mathews went first ball. “It’s just a little bit niggly so we want to make sure it’s 100 percent”, New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan said.
5 – Number of 4 or more wickets haul recorded by Matt Henry in just 18 ODI matches. By comparison, his opening partner Tom Latham was 17no at the end.
Guptill continued to launch every kind of bowler Sri Lanka sent at him both down the ground and square of the wicket.
The New Zealand attack kept up the pressure and they were backed up by some sharp fielding.
The 32-year-old Malinga, who is Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 captain, has been troubled by a knee injury since October and the team are unsure if he will be fit enough to travel to New Zealand with Thisara Perera joining the team.
“It was quite embarrassing”, Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said of his side’s performance.
“We could not deal with it and we misplaced too many wickets up entrance and we didn’t give our bowlers an opportunity to bowl at them”.
“We are pretty pleased with the way things went and as a bowling group we were fairly happy”. McCullum’s back injury flaring up was the result of crashing hard into the advertising hoardings, in order to save one run.

“We just had to bat and put runs on the board to put pressure on the Kiwis but unfortunately we kept losing wickets in the first 10 overs (and) that was really tough going”, said Mathews. It didn’t seam, or swing or bounce.
