Fox also scored with “Joy”, a rag-tag biopic about the creator of the Miracle Mop, ‘ that earned $17.5 million from 2,896 theaters. It also took in the most money ever for a second-weekend film with earnings of $153.5 million.
The seventh “Star Wars” film is already the fifth-biggest domestic grosser of all time, trailing “Avatar” at $760 million, “Titanic” at $658 million, “Jurassic World” at $652 million and “Marvel’s The Avengers” at $623 million.
What’s more, the space opera has yet to come out in China – ranked as the world’s second-largest movie market – and will not open in the Far East country until January 9.
The Walt Disney Company says the film achieved the mark Monday after just 12 days in theaters.
How many more records will “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” break as it continues to steamroll its way into box office history?
The last movie to reach $1 billion at similar speed was Jurassic World, which reached the same mark in 13 days back in June. Of course, if you’ve seen the movie, you know Anakin doesn’t appear in the film at all, though we do get a brief look at Darth Vader’s burned helmet.
The sci-fi adventure movie reached the milestone 12 days after its global release. If it tops the $100 million figure for next weekend, it will be the first movie in history to top $100 million 3 weekends in a row. “Concussion”, the Will Smith-NFL drama, took in $11 million, good for sixth place, followed by the financial-crisis saga “The Big Short”, which collected $10.5 million.
For a basis of comparison, the very first Star Wars movie released, latter called “A New Hope”, only had a total box office of $775.4 million in 1977.
