Miami’s Sun Bowl chances slip away in snow
Quarterback Luke Falk threw two touchdown passes and Washington State forced three turnovers and came up with two big stands late in the fourth quarter to hold off Miami 20-14 on a snowy Saturday at the 82nd Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

Washington State (9-4) bounced back from last season’s 3-9 record to reach a bowl game for the second time in four seasons under Leach.
The defense forced a three-and-out against Miami’s defense and the offense picked up 34 yards to set up an Erik Powell field goal to close the half with Washington State up 20-7.
After being shut out in the second and third quarters and trailing 20-7, Miami (8-5) finally got its offense going in the fourth.
Falk, the game’s MVP, was 29 of 53 for 295 yards and no interceptions.
Miami had a 3-yard touchdown pass from Brad Kaaya to Stacy Coley called back on a penalty with 5:14 to play. The Hurricanes still have not won a bowl game since 2006, and they should be kicking themselves for how they handled the end of this game.
Armstrong completed 12 of 19 passes for 174 yards and ran for 76 more to lead the way for Nebraska, which had a season high with 326 yards rushing.
Richt takes over for Interim Head Coach Larry Scott tomorrow. Miami has the statistical edge on defense, but Pac-12 offenses are considered superior to those in the ACC. Special-teams play has been unspectacular on both sides. He led Cougar receivers with 99 catches for 1,125 yards and 14 touchdowns. After all, the Cougars are in a bowl for just the second time since 2003. He’s got more credibility than I have at least, particularly when it comes to Washington State when I occasionally let my subjectivity get in the way of clear thinking. Washington State is 6-1 SU when leading after three quarters. Washington State began the season ominously as they lost 24-17 as 31-point favorites at home to Portland State. The Hurricanes were in the red zone two drives later and Walton got the ball again, though it’s worth pointing out his carry came two plays after the Hurricanes had a touchdown called back for a block in the back.
Washington State coach Mike Leach said “we had two guys” covering the pass. “You’re hoping people bite up and some stuff happens”.
“All season long we finished games strong”, Kaaya said.
Now, players and coaches alike know the kind of opportunity they have ahead.
The Hurricanes tried to establish the running game in the first quarter, giving the ball to starting running back Yearby 10 times. Poor offensive line play led to a punt, and penalties on defense gifted Washington State two first downs on third down throws. “He’s as talented as anybody in our conference, and we see some good ones, so it will be a major, major challenge for us and we obviously have to play extremely well to give ourselves a chance”.
The win, controversial as it was, gave Duke (8-5) its first bowl victory since a 7-6 triumph over Arkansas in the 1961 Cotton Bowl.

All that said, the difference between 8-5 and 9-4 means virtually nothing in the wake of a coaching change and new era being ushered in by Mark Richt. Rashawn Scott had a good performance for the Hurricanes, pulling in seven receptions for 74 yards and one TD.
