Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel curtails Cuba trip after police shooting kills 2
FOLLOWING THIS weekend’s double shooting by police in Chicago, much attention has focused, understandably, on the death of Bettie Jones, a grandmother who police admit presented no threat.

A 55-year-old community activist and mother of five, Bettie Jones, and 19-year-old student Quintonio LeGrier were both killed by police firing on them after a domestic disturbance involving LeGrier, who was emotionally disturbed.
LeGrier’s family questioned reports about his mental condition, saying he was an engineering honors student at Northern Illinois University who had problems like any other young person. She should not have to be shot down just coming to the door.
Emanuel late Sunday issued a statement in response to the latest shooting deaths, calling for a review of how Chicago police officers respond to calls dealing with mental health issues.
The latest controversial shooting occurred early Saturday morning as officers responded to a domestic violence call of a man wielding a bat.
Demonstrators led by Rev. Jesse Jackson march down State Street to protest the death of Laquan McDonald and the alleged cover-up that followed on December 6, 2015 in Chicago, Illinois.
“Why do [police] have to shoot first and ask questions later?”. Her research and other studies have found that officers trained in CIT methods use less force, are better equipped to defuse crises and reduce the risk of injury.
Grieving relatives and friends of the two victims gathered Sunday to remember them and criticize city officials who they said had once again failed residents. They said Jones was killed by accident and extended condolences. She died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
LeGrier’s mother, Janet Cooksey, said Sunday that police had shot her son seven times including once in the buttocks, which according to her, meant he was turning away.
“We couldn’t even get a call back”, she said. Police, who were responding to a 911 call made by LeGrier’s father after an argument with his son, have released few details beyond a brief statement.
“Something just needs to be done”.
“I identified myself as the father and I held my hands out”, he said.
Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration has been under scrutiny for mishandling the McDonald shooting.
In another policy change, the police department also placed the officer or officers involved on desk duty for 30 days, and says that will be the standard protocol going forward for all police-involved shootings.
The medical examiner’s office confirmed that Jones and LeGrier were black, but police have not revealed the race of the officer, according to the AP.
Chicago police referred The Associated Press’ requests for additional comment to the Independent Police Review Authority, the city’s main police oversight agency.
A prayer vigil for Jones was scheduled for later Sunday.
“We’re talking about trust and believability”, said Ford, a Chicago Democrat. The second was from Legrier.
“Emanuel, I want a personal apology for my son’s life”, Cooksey said. He said his son tried to bust the door open, but he kept him from doing so and called police. The police also told local media that LeGrier’s father had called Jones asking her to open the door for the police. “We have to fight for her rights”, says her daughter Latonya Jones.

Legrier was holding a bat, and he was shot multiple times after police contend he became combative. That training hasn’t been happening often enough, they said. She told WBBM that she thought her son would be transported to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, a standard practice at police departments across the country.
