David Cameron calls emergency meet over floods
Prime Minister David Cameron made the announcement after hosting a conference call of the emergency COBRA committee on the floods which have caused chaos during the post-Christmas holiday period.

The Prime Minister was visiting members of the Scarborough mountain rescue team when a woman shouted: “No more cuts to public services”.
“We’ve spent more in the last Parliament than in the previous parliament and we’re going to spend even more in this Parliament”.
“That’s not true”, he told Sky News as he visited volunteers at an emergency sandbagging centre in York.
The government was under pressure on Monday to review the quality of Britain’s flood defences.
York City Council said the River Ouse was expected to peak at more than 5m – close to to its highest recorded level of 5.40m.
However, Mr Cameron – speaking as he visited flood-hit areas – said the United Kingdom had spent “more per head of the population on flood defences in the north than we do in the south”.
“But we should also be doing something about our own adaptation, just as we should stop building houses that we are going to have to retrofit within 20 years because we haven’t done what we should have done about insulation and protection for them”.
“It has been clear since its election that this Government hasn’t grasped the reality of the climate change we’re already experiencing – which the experts tell us will result in more extreme weather, and extremes happening more often. And we’ll ask all those questions”, he said.
The EA has 18 severe flood warnings in place for the North East and North West, meaning there is a danger to life.
“The government must drop its complacency over the need for climate change adaptation”, McCarthy said. Flooding is expected in York today following prolonged and heavy rainfall on Christmas night and throughout Boxing Day, which has caused river levels to rise.
On Sunday, the government said 200 soldiers were being deployed to affected areas on top of 300 already on the ground.
“We’re still in a situation with major flood warnings”.
Amber warnings for rain are in place for parts of Scotland on Wednesday too.
“We’re beginning to feel that very strongly”, she said, asserting that 2,000 homes had been flooded in Leeds alone over the weekend and some 400 businesses adversely affected.
Ministers announced a review earlier this month following the floods in Cumbria which will look at whether homes have enough protection.
Six severe-flood warnings were in force.
“People in these communities should continue to check their flood risk, prepare for flooding, follow the advice from emergency services and never risk driving through flood water”.
He added: “As some areas of the country move from the emergency into the recovery phase, we’ll also make sure that the help we have given to Cumbria will be available to other parts of the country”.

She said: “It would not provide financial support for the majority of homes or businesses as it does not compensate for private losses; it would take several months to receive the majority of the funds and the fund only provides for a fraction of the total costs of assessed damage”.
