Christmas Day 2015 ratings: Downton Abbey beats Strictly Come Dancing
The overnight audience data compared with 5.84 million viewers for the show’s Christmas special in 2014, which rose to 7.7 million in consolidated ratings that include one week of time-shifted viewing, and to 8.8 million for its penultimate episode on ITV in November, which were the best ratings for the final season.

The real ratings victor was the Queen, whose 3pm broadcast had the biggest overall figures for the day, drawing 6.1 million on the BBC and 1.1 million on ITV, excluding +1 and catch-up services. The usually unlucky in love Lady Edith finally got her happy ending, as she Wednesday Bertie Pelham, while servants Anna and Mr Bates welcomed their first child.
According to the Radio Times, “romance is in the air” in the final Downton Abbey episode – though “for some the year’s end will prove bittersweet”, it goes on.
I won’t miss Downton Abbey, but I will miss seeing Dame Maggie Smith in a regular TV drama.
Gareth Neame told The Sun that Dame Maggie Smith, who plays Dowager Countess Lady Violet Crawley, had not been secured for any further series.
He said, “I tried to pinch the cricket pants a few years ago, only to get a phone call saying, ‘We can’t seem to find the cricket pants, we’re doing an exhibition at Lords, ‘ so I had to ‘fess up and give them back”.
He added: “We all feel very blessed”. Nobody regrets ending when we did. “The show did not end because any of our cast wanted to leave”.
Strictly Come Dancing’s Christmas special ranked in second place in the rankings with 6.5 million viewers, down 400,000 on last year’s show.
EastEnders, which was up against Downton at 8:45pm, pulled in 5.7 million viewers.

However, ITV’s victory will be overshadowed by the overall decline in people tuning into the main channels over Christmas Day.
