The flooding is the result of heavy downpours that have thrashed the south-eastern, bringing record rainfalls in some areas.

“National Weather Service crews will assess damage Saturday morning in southwest Birmingham and east Tuscaloosa, locations where tornadoes possibly touched down Christmas Day as storms roared through the state”.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Tornadoes swept through the Dallas area after dark on Saturday evening causing significant damage while a blizzard was blanketing parts of New Mexico and West Texas with snow, the latest in the nation’s freakish winter weather pattern that sent temperatures plunging to near zero wind chill in the western Plains even as numerous record highs are forecast for the eastern U.S.
At least 15 people have been killed in the states of Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas since Thursday, officials said.
NWS meteorologist Steve Fano said roughly eight tornadoes may have touched down across seven counties, though preliminary reports could not be confirmed until the morning.
Birmingham’s city government said earlier that several structures had been destroyed and that first responders were working to rescue people from the debris.
The service has issued tornado watches and warnings for areas in that state, as well as in parts of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Mississippi.
Forecasters say Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and parts of Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas will see winter weather conditions ranging from heavy snow to ice, accompanied by gusty winds. Lubbock and Amarillo prepared for a storm expected to begin Saturday night.
More could be on their way on Sunday, said the agency, which issued a tornado watch for several Houston-area counties and a warning for an area south of Jackson, Mississippi.
Severe weather also hit parts of Australia, where more than 100 homes were lost in Christmas Day brushfires.
The tornado-hit areas of Alabama and MS will get another round of rain on Monday night, Duffey said.
Six people were killed in Tennessee and one in Arkansas.
No one died in the damage.
“American and its employees stand ready to assist in the recovery efforts and we encourage our customers to join us by donating to the Red Cross”, Joe Taney, American Airlines’ vice president for Dallas-Fort Worth Hub Operations, said in a statement Sunday.
The National Weather Service said the river had exceeded a flood stage of 25 feet to 33.5 feet by 8 a.m. Saturday.
Storms hit southern and central USA states over the Christmas holiday unleashing floods and tornadoes that killed at least 34 people, toppled buildings and snarled transportation for millions during a busy travel time.
The authorities on Saturday recovered the body of a five-year-old boy who drowned after the vehicle he was riding in was submerged by floodwaters on Friday, said Coffee County Coroner Robert Preachers.
Other Alabama communities are assessing storm damage caused by flooding. “We still have some homes that have been demolished and not everyone in the homes has been accounted for”, Hernandez said.
Other parts of Texas were dealing with strong winds and precipitation, the weather service said.

The governor, who on Thursday declared a state of emergency for Alabama, said 190 roads were closed throughout the state Saturday, impacting every county. No damage was reported in the state. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said the victims were a 19-year-old female and two 22-year-old males.
