Israel’s supreme court cuts Ehud Olmert’s bribery jail term to 18 months
He is set to begin serving his term on February 15.

The trial of the former premier was linked to the construction of Jerusalem’s massive Holyland residential complex when Olmert served as the city’s mayor.
He was convicted over a real estate deal that took place while he served as Mayor of Jerusalem, prior to becoming Prime Minister in 2006.
The 70-year-old Olmert was convicted in March 2014 in a wide-ranging case that accused him of accepting bribes to promote a controversial real-estate project in Jerusalem and sentenced to six years.
September 2014 – Israeli Supreme Court rules Olmert can stay out of prison until verdict in the bribery case appeal.
“No bribe was ever offered to me and I never accepted one”, said Olmert, who wore an open-neck blue shirt and looked visibly relieved.
“A heavy weight was lifted from my chest today, when the Supreme Court exonerated me of the main charge, of Holyland”, a tired-looking Olmert told reporters outside the courtroom. It set the stage for Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and parts of the West Bank in 2005.
After the sentencing Olmert expressed relief that his previous conviction on the more serious bribery charge was overturned while maintaining his innocence on the charge he was convicted on.
He led his government to the Annapolis peace conference in November 2007 – launching more than a year of ambitious, but unsuccessful peace talks with the Palestinians.
Olmert has said he made unprecedented concessions to the Palestinians during those talks and was close to reaching an agreement at the time of his resignation, though the Palestinians have said his assessment was overly optimistic.
If the Supreme Court denies the appeal, Olmert goes to jail.

According to other media reports, following the verdict, Olmert gave a statement to the press saying he had never accepted any bribes and fully respected the decision of the justices to partially uphold his conviction.
