Iraq claims victory over ISIS in Ramadi
But taking the government center of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, is a major symbolic accomplishment for the Iraqi Security Forces.

“We will continue to support the Government of Iraq as it re-establishes the security, governance and services the people of Ramadi will need as they return to their city”, Hammond noted.
Gunshots and an explosion could be heard as a state TV reporter interviewed other soldiers celebrating the victory with their automatic weapons held in the air. There were sounds of explosions and gunfire in the background, Humvee vehicles and tanks progressing through Ramadi streets amid piles of rubble and collapsed houses.
On Dec. 22, U.S.-led coalition spokesman Col. Steve Warren noted that there was no Shia militia taking part in the offensive on Ramadi.
ISIL had an estimated force of about 400 fighters to defend central Ramadi a week ago.
Later on Monday, the Pentagon congratulated the Iraqi security forces for the operational achievement, saying that the recent Daesh losses, both in Iraq and Syria, demonstrated that the enemy was “losing momentum”.
If history repeats itself, the Iraqi forces will fail to maintain their ground and will be easily routed again by a more aggressive and rejuvenated ISIS group.
The Iraqis were also smart to move gradually against Ramadi. He said IS fighters still control 30 percent of Ramadi and that government forces do not fully control many districts from which IS fighters have retreated.
Commander of the Nineveh police Zanuon al-Sabawi, said at a press conference that the women have been executed in various forms.
The recapture of Ramadi was welcomed by US Secretary of State John Kerry, who said IS had suffered a major defeat. Anbar is a mostly Sunni province. Retaking Mosul would effectively mark the end of the caliphate proclaimed by Islamic State in adjacent Sunni areas of Iraq and Syria, according to Zebari. “There are still neighborhoods under their control, and there are still resistance pockets”.
Troops finally captured the government compound on Sunday, flushing out or killing IS fighters and suicide bombers who had been holding out in its buildings.
With Ramadi now under Iraqi government control, attention has already shifted to Mosul in the north, Iraq’s second city, which Isis conquered last June.
Fighting in and around the city is likely to continue for some time, analysts say. ISIS is expected to stage ambushes in outlying suburbs, to prevent the city’s pacification and rehabilitation.
