Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron (5) is chased down by Denver Broncos defensive end Malik Jackson (97) during the first half of an NFL football game, Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, in Denver. McCarron had certainly out played Osweiler through the first half but finished with an average quarterback rating of 87.8 on 22 of 35 passes and one touchdown.
The Bengals (11-4) still have a shot at a first-round bye, but only if Denver (11-4) loses at home to last-place San Diego (4-11) next weekend.
New England at Miami: Last week’s loss to the Jets means the Patriots need to win this game to ensure the AFC playoffs go through Gillette Stadium.
As for the Bengals (11-4), all they had to do was put their foot on the Broncos’ neck in the second quarter when they were up by two touchdowns and they could have won this game and had a first round bye.
The Bengals have already secured their Playoff spot for a franchise record fifth straight season, but they still have a lot to play for, and will not want to be dumped into the Wild Card Round after all their efforts so far this season.
On the season, the Cincinnati Bengals average 262.8 yards in passing and 114.2 yards in rushing. The Sanu touchdown capped a 13-play, 90-yard drive as the Bengals continued to chew up the clock against Denver’s top-ranked defense.
Seattle has dodged the debilitating effect of star players getting hurt as well as any team, behind the brilliance of quarterback Russell Wilson. Green. With the score, the Bengals jumped to a 7-0 lead on the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos, however, had a chance to win the game in regulation, but kicker Brandon McManus shanked his 45-yard field goal attempt. And lastly, a mistimed snap by the Bengals’ center ended up in the hands of a Denver defender who had a SUPER quiet game up until that point.
A fumble with 9:08 on the clock by Cincinnati’s AJ McCarron was recovered by Denver’s DeMarcus Ware, giving the OT win to the Broncos. The Broncos marched down the field with the opening possession of the third quarter for a touchdown, opening the door to their second-half comeback.
“I didn’t point my toe really at all, and I just wrapped the ball real bad”, McManus said. Before that kick, McManus had not missed an attempt under 45 yards on the season. However, Osweiler’s offensive line improved in the second half, allowing him to string together several successful drives.
Denver took its first lead on a 39-yard touchdown run by C.J. Anderson early in the fourth quarter, when he stepped through a couple of tackles and sprinted to the end zone.
He did, and Ware’s follow-up capped Denver’s second comeback from a 14-0 deficit at home this season.
If the Broncos came out of the half as they have in the past three games, scoring zero points, it would be another loss and a possible dagger to the heart of their season but they fought their way back with some great halftime adjustments.
McManus then redeemed himself by splitting the uprights from 37 yards out 5 minutes into the extra period. The defense stepped up and shut down the Bengals in the second half.
